Social Housing Conference: Fixing the broken market

Showersave will join a panel of experts at the Social Housing Conference where experts from across the sector will explain how the UK can deliver affordable housing to meet growing demand.

“In those parts of the country where the need is greatest, [we will] allow homes to be built for social rent, well below market level. Getting government back into the business of building houses, a new generation of council houses to help fix our broken housing market.” – Prime Minister Theresa May

Britain is building 60,000 too few houses a year, creating an affordability crisis that has had a disproportionate impact on younger people.

Just 6,800 new homes are built for social rent each year while the number of new affordable homes has been halved. In response, the Government has published a white paper on “Fixing our broken housing market” and set aside £9 billion for its Affordable Homes Programme. Local authorities in areas with the greatest shortages have been encouraged to bid for money to build new homes for social rent.

In the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy, social landlords are under increased scrutiny and must ensure their properties meet the highest standards. At a time when resources are scarce, landlords face a difficult financial choice between maintaining existing housing stock and delivering the new affordable homes the UK needs. Find out more here.
