Showersave and Recoup, the UK’s leading suppliers of Waste Water Heat Recovery for Showers (WWHRS), have reviewed the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 and Water Regs UK Ltd guidance. The conclusion? Double-walled WWHRS units do not require a check valve.

Why? The water within a WWHRS system won’t be drawn back into the cold water pipework, and there’s enough room for expansion. This is in line with gas/electric boilers and instantaneous water heaters (15 litres or under), which also don’t require check valves. The requirement for backflow prevention still applies to single-walled WWHRS units.
