A century of service, people and progress at James Hargreaves Plumbing Supplies

In an industry often defined by margins and materials, James Hargreaves Plumbing Supplies stands out for something far less tangible but far more powerful: people.

Founded in the early 1920s and proudly celebrating over a century in business, the company’s modern story truly took shape in 1968, when a group of local plumbers acquired a hardware shop in Blackburn bearing the James Hargreaves name. What followed was not just growth, but the careful building of a culture that still defines the business today.

That culture is embodied by leaders like Gary Beaumont, Sales Director, and Lee Meeks, Specifications Manager both of whom started their careers behind the trade counter. Gary joined at just 17, beginning in the warehouse and steadily progressing through branch management, area leadership and regional roles before reaching board level. Lee followed a similar path, moving from counter sales to branch management before carving out a specialist role supporting specifications, developers and large contracts. This knowledge of how the business operates at a leadership level ensures the business never loses sight of what its customers actually need.

Promoting from within, backed by family values

Ask what drives the company’s long term success and the answer is refreshingly consistent: invest in people, treat them well, and give them opportunities. James Hargreaves has built its reputation on promoting from within, backing that belief with training, NVQs, apprenticeships and genuine trust.

There’s also a strong “family business” ethos at play. Employees are supported not just financially, but personally, creating loyalty that’s rare in modern business. With many staff serving 10, 20 and even 40+ years, continuity and experience run deep across the branch network.

Stock, service and strong relationships

Operationally, the business has never been afraid to take bold decisions. Heavy investment in stock is a deliberate strategy, ensuring that when installers need products often at the last minute James Hargreaves has them on the shelf. That reliability, paired with consistently strong customer service, keeps tradespeople coming back.

While digital systems such as ERP platforms, EDI and API integrations are firmly in place, the company remains committed to face-to-face relationships. For many plumbers and heating engineers, the local branch counter is still the heartbeat of their working day and James Hargreaves actively encourages those connections.

Growth with purpose

Over the last decade, the company has expanded from around 15 branches to more than 70 nationwide, alongside major investment in warehousing, IT infrastructure and integrated trade counter showrooms. These showrooms have become an educational tool as much as a sales space, helping customers better understand products and solutions across plumbing, heating and bathrooms. But perhaps the most future focused investment has been in low carbon technology.

Leading the way on low carbon

Recognising the shift away from fossil fuels, James Hargreaves has built a dedicated low carbon department focused on air source heat pumps and renewable heating. With four specialist low carbon centres, in-house MCS expertise and tailored training programmes, the business has positioned itself as a vital partner in the industry’s journey towards Net Zero.

This capability has opened doors with developers, councils and social housing provider organisations that need both technical confidence and dependable supply chains. Few merchants can offer design support, installer training and product availability under one roof, and it’s an area where James Hargreaves is clearly differentiating itself.

Trusted partnerships

That same long term thinking extends to supplier relationships. Lee highlights the importance of working with knowledgeable, service driven partners such as Showersave, whose solutions have become increasingly critical in meeting evolving Building Regulations and SAP requirements. When service and expertise are strong, loyalty follows.

Advice for the next generation

For young people considering a career in the merchanting world, both Gary and Lee are unequivocal: this is an industry where hard work, communication skills and commitment are rewarded. Treat the business like it’s your own, they say, and opportunities will follow. Their own careers are proof.

Looking ahead to 2026

With continued branch expansion, growing involvement in renewables, new developer partnerships and investment in staff skills, the outlook is optimistic. After 100 years, James Hargreaves Plumbing Supplies isn’t standing still it’s evolving with confidence. As Gary puts it, the goal remains simple but powerful: grow the business, grow the people within it, and keep delivering the service customers rely on. After a century of doing just that, it’s a strategy that clearly works.
